FAQs

General information

  • Ketamine assisted therapy involves the use of ketamine, administered via IV infusion or nasal spray, to help manage depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain. Unlike traditional treatments, ketamine targets the brain's glutamate system, often providing rapid relief from symptoms.

  • Ketamine therapy may be suitable for those who haven’t found relief with traditional medications or are looking for a rapid intervention. We assess each person individually to determine if this therapy is the right fit.

  • If this is your first ketamine session, you will need to book a consultation here. Once you have been assessed, and are a suitable candidate for ketamine therapy, you can book your appointment here.

  • Ketamine therapy can be used to treat several mental health conditions, including treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and chronic pain. At The Burlington Clinic, we use evidence-based ketamine therapy protocols to support individuals who have not found relief with traditional treatments. For more information, you can read our blog—The Burlington Journal.

  • Determining whether ketamine therapy is appropriate requires an in-depth consultation with our clinical team. During your consultation, Dr. Saal will review your medical history, mental health needs, and treatment goals to ensure that ketamine is a safe and effective option for you. We will also conduct a physical evaluation, including a blood pressure check and ECG, to ensure the treatment is suitable for your physical health.

Preparing for your treatment

  • During a ketamine therapy session at The Burlington Clinic, you will be in a calm, supportive environment. Whether in our Harley Street clinic or in the comfort of your home, the session lasts about an hour. You’ll be seated or lying down comfortably, with Dr. Saal and one of our nursing team monitoring you throughout. The experience often leads to deep introspection, and many patients report feeling lighter or more grounded after the session. Integration sessions are available at request to help you process your experiences.

  • Avoid eating for 6 hours and drinking clear liquids for 2 hours before your session. Wear comfortable clothing, and if you are receiving treatment at home, ensure a quiet, comfortable space.

  • At-home treatment with The Burlington Clinic provides the same high-quality care you would receive at our Harley Street location. Dr. Saal and one of our nursing team will visit your home to administer the ketamine therapy session, ensuring safety and comfort throughout. We bring all necessary medical equipment to your home, and your therapy session will be conducted under strict medical supervision. This service is ideal for individuals who prefer to remain in a familiar environment. Once you have successfully completed your assessment, you can book your home session here.

Treatment plan & coverage

  • The number of ketamine therapy sessions you may need depends on your individual condition and response to treatment. Many patients experience relief after 4–6 sessions, but maintenance boosters may be recommended to sustain long-term benefits. During your consultation, we will discuss a personalised treatment plan, including how often you might need sessions to achieve your therapeutic goals. We offer wellness packages and maintenance packages offering a 20% discount compared to single sessions.

  • Some insurance plans may cover esketamine (Spravato) nasal spray therapy. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm coverage details.

Safety & effectiveness

  • Yes, when administered under medical supervision, ketamine therapy is considered safe. At The Burlington Clinic, all ketamine sessions are closely monitored by trained healthcare professionals to ensure the highest safety standards are met. We perform a thorough medical evaluation before beginning treatment, including blood pressure monitoring and ECG testing, to minimise risks.

  • Ketamine therapy is generally well-tolerated, but like any treatment, it can have side effects. Common side effects include mild dissociation, dizziness, nausea, or elevated blood pressure. We give dexamethodrone to reduce the risk of nausea. These effects usually subside quickly after the session ends. At The Burlington Clinic, our team monitors you closely during and after the session to ensure your safety and comfort.

  • In most cases, you do not need to stop your regular medications before beginning ketamine therapy, but it’s important that our team is aware of all medications and supplements you are currently taking. Certain medications, such as benzodiazepines, may affect how ketamine works. We will review all your medications during your consultation and make recommendations accordingly.

  • Many patients report feeling improvement after their first or second session. However, sustained benefits typically occur after completing a series of treatments, usually 4-6 sessions. The effects can vary from person to person, but many individuals feel significant relief within weeks. A six session package, as well as a four session maintenance package is available, with significant discounts, to support your successful recovery.

Client experience: a personal story.

  • "When I first considered exploring ketamine therapy in London, the idea of going to a ketamine IV clinic felt unappealing. I had a sterile vision of fluorescent lighting, white walls, and IV lines. Thankfully, Dr. Saal offered my treatment at home, which made all the difference. Being in a familiar environment brought a sense of safety and ease that was important for me."

    —Anonymous, London

  • "From the moment Saal and Malika arrived, I felt calm. Their care was professional yet deeply human—I felt genuinely cared for, not just as a client, but as a person. This made the experience far more meaningful."

    —Anonymous, London

  • "The therapy itself has been so helpful. I somehow felt a sense of both groundedness and lightness after the session—a balance I have been able to observe carry through my experiences and interactions in the weeks following. It also opened a deeper level of insight in my subsequent psychotherapy sessions, allowing me to connect with myself more honestly and with greater self-compassion."

    —Anonymous, London

  • "A unique aspect of my experience was the integration of music. I hadn’t played my guitar in years, but during one session, Saal, a talented musician, played at my request. The music helped me reach parts of myself that I had been wanting to reconnect with for some time."

    —Anonymous, London

  • "I didn’t realise that such a person-centred, compassionate therapeutic approach to psychedelic therapy was available in London. For all my fears about going into a clinic, my follow-up session at The Burlington Clinic at 10 Harley Street proved my assumptions wrong once again. The therapy room itself felt more like a living room, luxurious but cosy, complete with a fireplace and a sense of warmth and comfort. For anyone considering ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, I can’t recommend The Burlington Clinic highly enough."
